I want to start this week by sharing a personal story that reminded me of the importance of celebrating small wins in our lives and careers. My wife has been trying to make popovers, a type of pastry that requires a lot of precision and patience, in our smart oven. She has done this numerous times. She followed the recipe and the instructions, but they never came out right. They were either too flat or too dense. She was about to give up, but she decided to give it one more try with the traditional oven. And guess what? They were perfect! They were golden, crispy, and airy, just like the ones we had at a bakery. We enjoyed them with some butter and jam, and it was a delicious treat. This made me think about how sometimes we overlook the small wins in our lives, and how they can have a bigger impact when they add up. The same goes for our jobs. What we do sometimes might seem small in scale or scope, but every win is important and contributes to our overall goals and vision. That's why I think it's important for managers to recognize and appreciate the small wins of their teams, and celebrate them together. A team that grows together, wins together. A team that celebrates together, stays together. So, I want to ask you: What are some small wins that you are proud of this week? How do you celebrate them with your team? Let me know in the comments below, and let's spread some positivity and gratitude!

In my early career, I achieved something truly remarkable at the company I worked for.How remarkable? It was an extremely significant accomplishment, and everyone benefited from it—both inside and outside the company. One day, I was chatting with an executive at the company, and he was surprised to find out I was behind this achievement. "Did you know everyone's taking credit for this, and your name hasn't come up?" he said.It was frustrating, like getting sucker-punched. It’s great to share credit, as sometimes multiple people work on something simultaneously, but it made me realize that some might take advantage of that. It's important to celebrate your successes out loud. In some places, you might need to over-communicate your accomplishments.Managers: remember to give your employees the credit they deserve. It will reflect even better on you than the achievement itself. At PepsiCo we celebrate success by giving ‘smiles awards’, but also take the time to recognize our team achievements on an ongoing basis.Tag someone you are really proud off and let them know.

This is not a post about chocolate. It’s a culture lesson. Last year I put a call out on LinkedIn for someone from the chocolate industry to help my son with some research for a school project. The power of this platform connected me with a kind man so generous with his time. And yesterday I met him in real life. Michael Huggins (pictured below with us) gave a very warm welcome to Cadbury’s home in Bourneville as it celebrates its 200th year celebrations. My kids expected to eat chocolate all day. What they got instead was a lesson in culture. Everything Michael talked about connected back to the original ethos the Cadbury brothers had envisaged for a business trying to do things differently. Some might say, ahead of their time. Walking around Cadbury World there were so many references to how, over the years, employees were front and centre of decision making - from welfare provisions and healthcare to housing, recreation and celebration. Visitors can’t possibly avoid being immersed in the importance of the company’s culture and its central, yet humble, community role as part of their visit, and so of course it was something I discussed with the kids at length. Today, the business holds on to a Glassdoor score of 4 which I looked up on my way home. Thank you Michael. We all enjoyed meeting you and hearing about your almost four decade long career journey with company. Your passion shines. Link to a brilliant article that explains a bit more about the story behind the business’s culture for those interested. Don’t forget, you can get all my “behind the scenes life of a NED” on Instagram by following at Circles_in_a_circle#culture #companyvalues #employees #values #behaviours
